Job Overview
2026 EPWP Skilled Fire Fighters X19 – Polokwane Local Municipality Polokwane Local Municipality is recruiting 19 EPWP Skilled Fire Fighters within the Disaster Management & Fire Services Department.
The programme provides an opportunity for qualified candidates to gain practical firefighting and emergency response experience while supporting community safety services.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12
- Fire Fighter I qualification
- Fire Fighter II with Hazmat Operations or equivalent
- SAQA accredited qualification from:
- Southern African Emergency Services Institute
- Institution of Fire Engineers
- No criminal record
- Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
- Medical Test compliant with NFPA 1582 standards
- 0–1 year relevant experience
- Valid Code C1 driver’s licence
- Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays
Competencies Required
- Good communication skills
- Ability to work under pressure and emergency conditions
- Teamwork and discipline
- Knowledge of firefighting equipment and procedures
- Understanding of occupational health and safety
- Ability to carry heavy equipment
- Ability to handle stressful situations
- Must not be claustrophobic
Key Responsibilities
- Attend fire and rescue calls
- Operate and monitor the control room
- Conduct daily vehicle and equipment inspections
- Attend hazardous material (Haz-Mat) incidents and special services calls
- Maintain fire stations, vehicles, and equipment
- Participate in inspections, drills, and training exercises
- Deliver effective firefighting and rescue services
- Support fire prevention strategies
- Perform additional duties assigned by supervisors
Screening & Compliance Requirements

- Physical fitness assessments
- Medical examinations to determine fitness for duty

- Candidates must be physically fit and medically capable of firefighting duties
- Shift work, weekends, and public holidays are compulsory
- This is a temporary EPWP opportunity and does not guarantee permanent employment
