Key Responsibilities
Operational Duties
- Report for duty, sign on, and prepare locomotives for operation by performing thorough safety inspections.
- Assist the train driver during shunting activities and while en route.
- Conduct pre-trip preparations, ensuring all systems and equipment are functioning correctly.
- Actively participate in shunting and yard activities to ensure seamless train movements.
Emergency Response
- Support the train driver during emergencies, adhering to safety protocols and quick response measures.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Accurately complete the train journal after each shift and submit it to the Section Manager.
- Manage various administrative tasks associated with train operations.
Qualifications and Experience
To qualify for the Train Assistant Learnership, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Educational Requirements:
- Matric (Grade 12) with pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science as subjects.
- Physical and Medical Standards:
- Minimum height of 1.6 meters.
- Verified physical, hearing, vision, and mental fitness, as determined through medical evaluations.
- Practical Experience:
- Completion of both theoretical and practical components of train assistant duties.

Knowledge
- Comprehensive understanding of communication systems used in rail operations.
- Familiarity with depot layouts, locomotive classes, and train working rules.
Skills
- Proficiency in locomotive preparation, coupling, and uncoupling techniques.
