Background & Job Description
Eskom Rotek Industries (ERI), a division of Eskom responsible for critical support functions, is seeking to fill 15 Utilityman vacancies within its Bulk Material Services Unit. This role is tailored for individuals passionate about hands-on, heavy-duty work involving manual labour and equipment handling in a coal operations environment.
Successful candidates will support operations by performing a wide variety of labour-intensive tasks—such as pushing, lifting, carrying, holding, and moving tools and machinery—within workshops and testing facilities. This position is ideal for hardworking individuals with previous technical experience who thrive in physically demanding environments.
Tasks
• Perform manual labour duties as assigned in coal operations
• Prepare for electrical testing on transformers, ensuring the area and equipment are in proper condition
• Clean and maintain high voltage test apparatus and test areas
• Maintain a clean and safe workshop environment
• Participate in workshop toolbox talks and SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment and Quality) initiatives
• Handle equipment and tools safely and effectively
• Adhere to health and safety regulations, including working at heights
• Assist with HIRA (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment) compilation
• Follow standard operating procedures for workshop cleaning
Qualifications
• Minimum Educational Requirement:
- Grade 12 / Matric Certificate
Experience
• 1–2 years of technical field experience
• Familiarity with cleaning workshops and testing apparatus
• Experience in a heavy industrial or utility service setting is advantageous
Skills and Competencies
• Effective time management and ability to meet deadlines
• Willingness to work overtime when necessary
• Competence in conflict resolution
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to compile Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments (HIRA)
Knowledge Requirements
• Basic understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) principles
• Familiarity with cleaner’s work procedures specific to workshop settings
• Awareness of safety rules and regulations within industrial sites
• Understanding of the importance of tool and equipment maintenance
• Ability to perform tasks at height when required
• Basic technical/practical skills associated with manual and mechanical operations
