Background & Job Description
Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU), a respected academic institution focused on developing qualified health professionals, is inviting applications for four Security Officer vacancies. These positions are ideal for dedicated individuals passionate about safety and campus security. As part of the university’s essential operations, Security Officers will be entrusted with maintaining a secure environment that supports both academic excellence and community wellbeing.
Candidates will be responsible for protecting university property, safeguarding students, staff, and visitors, and ensuring that university regulations are observed. Working within a tertiary educational environment, Security Officers must demonstrate professionalism, responsibility, and vigilance at all times.
Tasks
Security Officers at SMU will be expected to perform the following duties:
- Patrol university premises regularly to maintain order and establish a visible presence
- Monitor surveillance systems and respond promptly to alarms or suspicious activity
- Enforce university safety policies and procedures across all faculties and facilities
- Control access to buildings and restrict unauthorized individuals from entering secure areas
- Conduct safety inspections and submit written reports for incidents and irregularities
- Assist during emergencies such as evacuations, lockdowns, or first-aid response
- Serve as the first line of communication between university security and emergency services
- Provide directional or general assistance to students, staff, and visitors
- Report maintenance issues, hazards, or breaches to appropriate authorities
Qualifications
To be considered for the Security Officer vacancies at SMU, applicants must possess the following:
- Matric / Grade 12 Certificate
- PSIRA Grade C or higher (Valid and in good standing)
- Basic training in safety regulations and emergency response
- Physically fit and capable of standing or patrolling for extended periods
- Ability to work rotational shifts, including weekends and public holidays
Experience
Applicants must demonstrate a proven background in the security industry, particularly within the public or institutional sector:
- Minimum of 3 years of hands-on security experience
- Exposure to tertiary or academic environment will be highly advantageous
- Experience handling CCTV, surveillance, and alarm systems is preferred
- Computer literacy and knowledge of digital security systems is a plus
- Valid driver’s license (optional but beneficial)
