Background & Job Description
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), in collaboration with SASSETA (Safety and Security Sector Education and Training Authority), invites applications for its two-year internship programme aimed at recent graduates in science, engineering, and technology (SET) disciplines. This strategic initiative is designed to build skills, provide real-world experience, and increase graduate employability in South Africa’s growing technology and innovation sector.
Interns will benefit from structured mentorship, hands-on learning opportunities, and exposure to some of South Africa’s leading experts in engineering and applied science. This internship is a gateway to understanding the practical applications of academic knowledge and contributing to nationally significant research and development.
Tasks
Interns will be expected to contribute to various research and development projects within the CSIR’s science and engineering units. Typical tasks may include:
- Assisting with the design, testing, and implementation of engineering solutions
- Supporting technical teams in experimental setups, data collection, and analysis
- Participating in problem-solving sessions and technical reviews
- Contributing to technical documentation and reporting
- Learning and applying advanced technologies in relevant engineering disciplines

Qualifications
To be considered for the CSIR/SASSETA Internship Programme, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Must be a South African citizen
- Successfully completed a qualification (National Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent) in one of the following areas:
- Electrical Engineering
- Electronic Engineering
- Mechatronic Engineering

Experience
