What is Ilima Coal Artisan Learnerships?
The Ilima Coal Artisan Learnership Programme is a structured two-year development opportunity that combines classroom-based technical training with practical workplace exposure. Learners will gain the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to qualify as artisans in the mining sector. The learnership agreement commences on 26 September 2025 and offers a chance to work alongside industry experts while developing critical technical competencies.

Available Learnership Trades
Applicants may apply for one of the following trades:

  • Electrician
  • Fitting & Machining

Minimum Requirements
To be considered for the programme, candidates must meet the following entry criteria:

  • Completed N3 certificate in the relevant trade
  • Willingness to commit to the full two-year programme
  • Must be a South African citizen

Role Responsibility

  • Attend all required training sessions and workshops
  • Gain practical workplace experience under supervision
  • Complete trade-related tasks and assignments to industry standards
  • Adhere to safety protocols and company policies
  • Work effectively as part of a team in the mining environment

About Ilima Coal Company
Ilima Coal Mine, also known as Pembani Coal Carolina, is both an opencast and underground coal mine owned by the Pretorius Group of Companies (PGC). The mine is located near Carolina, Mpumalanga, just 3 km east of the town along the R38. Acquired in 2016 from Pembani Coal Carolina (PCC), the colliery operates under a large mining right with phased development planned to sustain operations for 30 years. This long-term outlook highlights Ilima Coal’s dedication to growth, job creation, and artisan development within the region.
