Introduction

Metrobus, a key division of the City of Johannesburg, is inviting applications from skilled individuals to join its Breakdown Crew team (x7 positions). This is a permanent opportunity for Johannesburg residents, Metrobus employees, and members of the City of Johannesburg community who meet the required qualifications. The role plays an essential part in ensuring bus breakdowns are handled efficiently, thereby keeping the city’s transportation system reliable and safe.


What is the Breakdown Crew Role?

The Breakdown Crew at Metrobus is responsible for:

  • Towing and transporting buses safely to depots or service areas.
  • Performing minor mechanical repairs on-site to restore vehicles.
  • Ensuring passenger transport services remain uninterrupted.

This role is critical in maintaining operational excellence and safety in the Metrobus service network.


Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following essential criteria:

  • Matric / Grade 12 Certificate or equivalent (NQF Level 4)
  • Valid Driver’s License: Code C; EC1/04; EC
  • At least 3 years’ functional work experience, with a minimum of 6 months in using breakdown tools and equipment
  • SAQA accreditation required for all foreign-acquired qualifications

Role Responsibilities

The successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Provide breakdown and towing services for buses
  • Respond promptly to breakdown calls, assess problems, and confirm locations
  • Diagnose and investigate vehicle issues
  • Perform basic repair services such as:
    • Jump-starting flat batteries
    • Changing or inflating tyres
    • Replacing spark plugs
    • Reconnecting loose wires
  • Tow and transport buses safely to designated service depots
  • Maintain tow trucks and related tools
  • Dismantle damaged buses to salvage usable parts
  • Keep accurate breakdown activity records and update files
  • Ensure safety regulations are observed during all towing operations

Skills and Attributes

Metrobus is seeking candidates with the following skills and competencies:

  • Ability to tow and transport buses safely without causing damage
  • Strong knowledge of road safety regulations
  • Skilled in using towing equipment and basic mechanical tools
  • Ability to perform minor mechanical repairs effectively
  • Strong time management and reliability under pressure
  • Ability to work in demanding and emergency response environments

Core Competencies and Conditions

  • Candidates will be required to sign both a permanent employment contract and an annual performance contract
