Introduction
The South African Rugby Union (SARU) is offering an exciting Graduate Internship Programme for 2025, designed to provide young graduates with hands-on work experience and professional workplace exposure. These internships are open to unemployed graduates up to the age of 35 and are based at SARU’s offices in Plattekloof, Cape Town.
Through this programme, graduates will have the opportunity to gain practical insights into various departments, including Communication and Commercial, Medical, Operations and Finance, and Participation and Development.
What is South African Rugby Union (SARU): Graduate Internship Programme?
The SARU Graduate Internship Programme is a 12-month structured learning and workplace training initiative that aims to empower graduates by equipping them with professional skills and knowledge. Each department offers a tailored internship role aligned with the graduate’s field of study, ensuring career development and growth within the sports industry.
Available Internship Positions:
1. Graduate Intern – Communication and Commercial Department
Location: Plattekloof, Cape Town
Closing Date: 05 September 2025
Number of Interns: 2
Responsibilities
- Assisting in promoting SA Rugby through brand campaigns and event support
- Supporting PR and relationship management activities
- Performing administrative duties for the marketing and commercial teams
- Coordinating sponsor activations and matchday experiences
- Collecting and reporting on account performance and ROI
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Sports Marketing, or related field
- No prior work experience required

- Strong attention to detail
- Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work under pressure
2. Graduate Intern – Medical Department
Location: Plattekloof, Cape Town
Closing Date: 05 September 2025

Responsibilities
- Assisting with document preparation and appointment coordination
- Managing medical records and safeguarding confidential data
- Supporting BokSmart activities and managing social media content
- Assisting with medical stock management and office maintenance
Qualifications & Experience
- 3-year National Diploma in Business or Office Administration
- No prior work experience required

3. Graduate Intern – Operations and Finance Department
Location: Plattekloof, Cape Town

Responsibilities
- Assisting with accounts payable, receivable, and general ledger tasks
- Processing invoices and reconciliations
- Supporting financial administration and reporting
Qualifications & Experience
- 3-year National Diploma in Finance or related field
- No prior work experience required

4. Graduate Intern – Participation and Development Department
Location: Plattekloof, Cape Town

Responsibilities
- Maintaining and updating data on community rugby programmes
- Assisting in data analysis and reporting
- Supporting policy development with data-driven insights
- Contributing to strategic planning and documentation
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree or 3-year Diploma in Data Management, Data Science, or related field
- No prior work experience required
- Basic understanding of rugby is advantageous

- Data system and analysis skills (intermediate level)
- Planning and communication skills
Minimum Requirements
- Relevant Diploma or Degree in line with the internship applied for
- Must be an unemployed graduate up to 35 years old
- South African citizen
- No prior work experience required
- Computer literacy essential
Role Responsibility
Each intern will be assigned responsibilities specific to their department, including:
- Administrative and operational support
- Assisting in projects and campaigns
- Data capturing and analysis
- Report preparation and presentations
- Supporting departmental objectives to enhance SARU’s operations
