The AFGRI Apprenticeship Program is a three-year in-service training experience designed to equip apprentices with the skills and knowledge required to excel in their roles. The program is structured to include both theoretical and practical training, ensuring a well-rounded learning experience.

Training Duration and Structure

Total Duration: 3 years
Qualification: Tractor or Earthmoving Mechanic
Probation Period: The first 6 months are a probationary period. During this time, either party may withdraw without any consequences. After successfully completing the probation, the apprentice will sign a contract with AFGRI and commence formal training.

Training Components

  1. Practical Training: Apprentices will attend a Practical Training Institute to complete various phases of their training. This hands-on experience is critical for developing the technical skills necessary for the role.
  2. Theoretical Training: Apprentices will enroll in N subjects at a college through distance learning. This may include mandatory Saturday classes. The theoretical training complements the practical experience, providing a solid foundation in the principles of mechanics and engineering.
  3. Product Training: Training at the John Deere Training Facility in Boksburg and other supplier locations, along with internal training sessions conducted by AFGRI specialists. This product-specific training ensures that apprentices are familiar with the latest technologies and equipment used in the industry.

Financial Aspects

AFGRI covers the training costs for apprentices who pass their assessments. Should an apprentice fail any training modules, they must retake these at their own expense and in their own time. The apprenticeship is bound by a three-year contract, with a work-back period equivalent to the time taken to qualify. Apprentice Responsibilities

As an apprentice, your duties will include:

  • Alternatively, a Matric Certificate with subjects including: Mathematics (not Literacy), Technical Mathematics (not Literacy), Physical Science, Technical Science, Engineering Graphics and Design
