Key Responsibilities
As a Port Worker, you will be responsible for a wide range of tasks that are vital to the smooth functioning of the port. These include:
- Cleaning of Operational Equipment: Ensuring that operational equipment, such as ship-to-shore cranes, cranes’ cabins, and other related machinery, are clean and in good working condition.
- Inspection of Container Condition: Regular checks on the condition of containers to ensure they meet safety and operational standards.
- Reefer Monitoring Operations: Overseeing refrigerated containers (reefers) to ensure that they are functioning correctly and maintaining the required temperature for the cargo.
- Handling Rail Wagons: Opening and closing rail wagons’ twist-locks to facilitate the loading and unloading of cargo.
- Cargo Operations: Engaging in loading, off-loading, and securing cargo in compliance with standard operating procedures.
- Hooking/Unhooking and Tarping/Untarping: Involves the safe attachment and detachment of cargo and tarping operations where necessary.
- Dunnage Management: Placing and removing dunnage (material used to protect cargo) to ensure the safe transport of goods.
- Maintaining Cleanliness: Cleaning operational areas, including rail trucks, plants, workshops, offices, sheds, and ablution facilities as instructed.
- Documentation: Completing applicable documentation, such as accident reports, to ensure proper records are maintained.
- Equipment Identification: Correctly identifying and handling cargo equipment and gear.
Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Educational Background:
- Grade 12 / NQF 04 with a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience, OR
- Grade 10 / NQF 02 with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
