The 12-month Trainee Underwriter Program at Old Mutual is designed to train individuals in the field of Individual Life Underwriting. This program is a stepping stone for those interested in risk underwriting, offering a comprehensive training plan that includes classroom instruction, independent study, and on-the-job training. Participants in this program are offered a stipend during the training period, and upon successful completion, trainees will be eligible to apply for permanent positions within the underwriting team.

Key Responsibilities

During the program, participants will:

  • Make underwriting decisions under the guidance of a mentor.
  • Manage intermediary inquiries and provide advice on specific underwriting requirements.
  • Accurately capture information in the product administration system.
  • Communicate effectively with clients and distribution channels in writing.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and underwriting standards.
  • Develop key skills in analyzing health conditions, environmental factors, and risk exposure.
  • Gather and assess financial information and risk exposure.
  • Build strong relationships with clients, agents, and brokers.
  • Participate in telephonic interviews to gather pertinent risk assessment information.
  • Provide indirect services to clients and intermediaries, while delivering high-quality administrative support.

Role Requirements

Candidates interested in the Trainee Underwriter Program must meet the following criteria:

  • A Matric certificate with either Biology/Life Sciences and Mathematics or Biology/Life Sciences and Accounting.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification (BSc, BCom, or a medically aligned degree at NQF level 7).
  • Previous experience in a telephonic customer service role is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in English, with fluency in an additional African language being beneficial.
  • Competency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is essential.
  • An understanding of life insurance products and processes is a plus.
