Introduction
AFGRI, a leading agricultural services company in South Africa, is offering a golden opportunity to school leavers who are passionate about a career in mechanics and technical maintenance. The company is opening applications for its 3-year Apprenticeship Programme aimed exclusively at matriculants. This in-service training pathway leads to a formal qualification as a Tractor Mechanic or Earthmoving Mechanic, offering a hands-on, structured learning experience that combines theoretical knowledge with practical application.

This initiative is crafted for young South Africans seeking a promising start in the mechanical trades, particularly within the agricultural and heavy machinery industries. The programme is designed not only to equip apprentices with the necessary technical skills but also to instill professional discipline, teamwork, and customer service excellence. With full support through learning institutes, supplier training, and in-house coaching, AFGRI’s programme is a highly sought-after opportunity.

Job Description
This three-year apprenticeship is specifically intended for recent matriculants and includes a probation period of six months. During this time, both the employer and the apprentice can assess the suitability of the engagement. If both parties are satisfied, a contractual agreement is signed, initiating formal training under AFGRI’s structured programme.

The apprenticeship focuses on developing practical competencies and includes:

  • Attendance at a Practical Training Institute during various training phases (if applicable)
  • Enrollment in relevant N courses through distance learning (if required and available)
  • Saturday classes as part of distance education (if applicable)
  • On-the-job learning and workplace training
  • Comprehensive product training from renowned suppliers such as John Deere
  • Internal technical training conducted by AFGRI and external experts

It is important to note that training comes at no cost to the apprentice as long as it is passed. Failed modules must be repeated at the apprentice’s own expense and time. The apprenticeship contract is valid for 3 years and may not exceed 4 years in total. If an apprentice has not qualified within this period, the agreement is automatically terminated. A work-back obligation equal to the training duration is also enforced, with associated costs for early withdrawal.
