The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is inviting applications from unemployed graduates for its Bacteriology Internship Programme 2025. Hosted at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Research (ARC-OVR) campus in Pretoria, this opportunity is tailored for science graduates who want to gain advanced laboratory training and professional exposure in microbiology and veterinary research.
What is the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) Bacteriology Internship?
The ARC Bacteriology Internship is a two-year fixed-term programme designed to equip graduates with practical laboratory experience. Interns will receive specialized training in microbiology, serology, and molecular diagnostics while contributing to animal and public health research.
This initiative provides an excellent platform for young scientists to work with leading researchers, strengthen their technical knowledge, and prepare for careers in scientific research, veterinary sciences, and diagnostics.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- BSc Honours degree in Microbiology, Animal Health, or a related discipline
- Strong knowledge of microbiology, serology, and PCR techniques
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- A valid driver’s license will be an added advantage
Additional requirements:
- Two-year fixed-term contract
- Foreign qualifications must include a SAQA evaluation report
- Preference will be given to designated groups in line with the ARC Employment Equity Plan
- Applicants not contacted within four weeks after the closing date should consider their applications unsuccessful
Role Responsibility
Successful candidates will be expected to:
- Collect and process samples from abattoirs
- Receive, catalogue, and organise laboratory specimens
- Prepare and manage laboratory reagents
- Conduct microbiological, serological, and molecular assays for bacterial detection and identification
- Maintain accurate laboratory records and compile detailed reports
