Introduction
The SANParks Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) offers short-term employment opportunities that support environmental conservation and community development. For 2025, Golden Gate Highlands National Park is inviting applications for five skilled environmental monitor positions.
These fixed-term roles operate until 31 March 2026 and involve direct contribution to conservation, outdoor law enforcement, and ecological protection. This is an opportunity for individuals who are passionate about protecting South Africa’s natural heritage while gaining valuable field experience in a national park setting.
What is SANParks Expanded Public Works Programme?
The EPWP is a government initiative designed to provide temporary work opportunities to unemployed South Africans while contributing to meaningful public service projects. In the context of SANParks, EPWP roles focus on:
- Wildlife conservation
- Anti-poaching efforts
- Ecological monitoring and rehabilitation
- Fire and invasive species management
Environmental monitors are essential frontline workers in safeguarding biodiversity and natural resources.
Minimum Requirements
To qualify, applicants must meet the following core requirements:
- Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 qualification (Standard 10)
- Good physical fitness for extended patrols in mountainous terrain
- Willingness to undergo a medical fitness examination
- No criminal record; valid police clearance required
- Flexibility to work weekends and after hours
Additional preferences that strengthen your application:
- Valid driver’s license
- Firearms competency (self-loading rifles, manually operated rifles, 9mm pistols)
- Own reliable transport and accommodation (SANParks does not provide staff housing)
- Willingness to undergo a fitness assessment
Role Responsibility
Selected environmental monitors will perform a variety of duties, including:
- Law enforcement and patrols: monitoring wildlife, anti-poaching, problem animal control (on foot, by vehicle, or horseback)
- Conservation infrastructure maintenance: maintaining fences and trails, managing soil erosion, repairing roads, rehabilitating damaged areas
- Fire management: suppressing wildfires, setting firebreaks, conducting prescribed burns
- Alien species eradication: clearing invasive plant species
- Record keeping and reporting: maintaining incident logs, sightings, vehicle logbooks, and reporting to section rangers or corporals
- Additional support tasks: assisting at stables for horse-riding activities and general conservation tasks as required
