Introduction
ARTISAN ELECTRICIAN (6 POSTS) – City of Tshwane, Gauteng The City of Tshwane invites suitably qualified and experienced candidates to apply for six permanent positions as Artisan Electricians. Job Description
The Artisan Electricians will be responsible for executing various technical and physical tasks involving the city’s electricity network and metering systems. Key duties include:
- Performing specialized electricity operations
- Auditing large-, medium-, and low-power electricity meters
- Identifying and removing illegal electricity connections
- Installing and maintaining electricity meters
- Disconnecting and removing circuit breakers and prepaid meters
- Conducting metering and credit control tasks
- Joining medium- and low-voltage electrical cables
- Wiring low-voltage meter boxes from the busbar
- Carrying out operations on both overhead and underground electrical networks
- Inspecting metering points and identifying any illegal connections
- Strictly adhering to the safety procedures under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993)
This position will require the ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions, including working at heights, and includes shift work, standby duties, and overtime as needed.
Requirements
To qualify for the Artisan Electrician role, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
- Trade Certificate as an Electrician (Red Seal)
- A minimum of two years’ practical experience working on local authority electrical networks
- A valid Code C1 driver’s license and a valid PrDP
- Physically fit and healthy, with the ability to perform prolonged manual labor
- Willingness to work shifts, remain on standby, and work overtime
- Must undergo a criminal record check and be willing to have fingerprints taken by the Tshwane Metro Police at the applicant’s own cost
Role Responsibility
Successful applicants will be expected to:
- Execute technical operations related to metering, electricity audits, and infrastructure maintenance
- Detect, document, and safely remove unauthorized and illegal power connections
- Accurately install, disconnect, and troubleshoot meters and circuit breakers
- Perform cable joining and other infrastructure-related tasks
- Carry out fault-finding and diagnostics on the electrical network
- Assist in ensuring citywide compliance with electricity standards and billing systems
- Contribute to reducing electricity loss through diligent inspection and enforcement
- Follow strict safety protocols in line with national health and safety legislation
