Background & Job Description

The City of Ekurhuleni is inviting applications from committed and community-driven individuals to take part in a Rodent Control Programme as General Workers. This programme is ward-based and aims to empower local residents to actively participate in improving public health and environmental conditions in their communities. The temporary assignment offers a hands-on opportunity to engage with fellow residents through door-to-door campaigns, surveys, and health education.

Applicants must reside in the specific ward they will serve. Proof of residence and the ward number should be included in the application documents.


Tasks

Successful candidates will be expected to perform the following responsibilities:

  • Conduct door-to-door visits to a designated number of households within a specific ward.
  • Educate community members on rodent control and other environmental health issues.
  • Distribute educational pamphlets and awareness material.
  • Mobilise local residents for block meetings and educational campaigns.
  • Identify rodent-infested premises and provide follow-up reports.
  • Liaise with Environmental Health Practitioners (EHPs).
  • Participate in scheduled rodent control education campaigns.
  • Report directly to the Environmental Health Practitioner (immediate supervisor).
  • Reach a daily minimum inspection target of 30 premises.
  • Complete and maintain daily attendance registers for voluntary participation.
  • Record data including:
    • Number of premises visited
    • Number of pamphlets distributed
    • Identified rodent-infested premises
    • Follow-up actions taken
  • Conduct public health talks and assist in managing attendance at educational events.

Qualifications

To be eligible for this opportunity, applicants must have:

  • Minimum of Grade 10 certificate or equivalent qualification
  • Be a resident of Ekurhuleni, based specifically in the ward they will serve
  • Must attach proof of residence with a visible ward number on the document

Experience

  • No prior work experience is required
  • Previous involvement in community work or public health initiatives will be advantageous
  • Basic communication and interpersonal skills preferred
