Role Responsibility

As a Dispensary Support staff member, you will embark on a journey of growth by enrolling in a learner basic pharmacist assistant course. Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Completing the proficiency test required for registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a learner basic assistant.
  • Supporting the pharmacist with daily operations, including the sale of Schedule 1 medicines or substances under supervision.
  • Assisting with the preparation, compounding, and manipulation of non-sterile medicines according to approved procedures.
  • Handling the unpacking and merchandising of stock, ensuring dispensary and OTC (Over-the-Counter) shelves are clean and organized.
  • Learning to interpret scripts accurately and acting responsibly within the framework of legal requirements.
  • Picking, packing, labeling, and checking medication under the guidance of a pharmacist.

Effective Management of Staff

As part of the team, you’ll be expected to demonstrate professionalism and reliability while supporting team objectives, including:

  • Promoting a collaborative work environment.
  • Assisting colleagues with stock control and management tasks, including monitoring expiry dates.
  • Reporting discrepancies in stock levels or errors to the dispensary manager.
  • Managing cleanliness and organization of the dispensary area.

Effective Management of Operations

Dispensary Support staff are integral to maintaining efficient operations. Responsibilities include:

  • Following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for stock receipt and handling.
  • Ensuring the accuracy and compliance of medication labeling and dosage under supervision.
  • Following up with patients regarding script tracking reports and appointment schedules.
  • Assisting with call center scripts and patient service calls.

Effective Management of Business Development Function

The Dispensary Support role also includes customer-facing responsibilities, such as:

  • Providing helpful health-related information to customers to promote wellness.
  • Assisting with scheme authorization for chronic, HIV, AIDS, and oncology medications.
  • Supporting the dispensary team in delivering excellent customer service to enhance the company’s reputation.

The Ideal Candidate

Skills and Attributes:

  • Proficiency in English and a second language (reading, writing, and speaking).

Qualifications:

  • A Grade 12 certificate (Matric) with Pure Mathematics (50%), Life Science, or Physical Science with an overall average of at least 50%.
  • Successful completion of the proficiency test to register with SAPC as a learner basic assistant.

Advantageous Experience:

  • Previous experience in retail FMCG or Dis-Chem’s front shop.
  • Knowledge of drug and family planning protocols, complementary medicine, and tools like Unisolv, SAP, and E-Scripting.

  • Clear criminal and credit records as verified by MIE.
  • Successful completion of a proficiency test assessing capability for SAPC registration.
