Participants will gain comprehensive knowledge of pharmaceutical principles, dispensing practices, and the significance of maintaining high standards in a professional work environment. Upon registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as learner basic assistants, learners will be employed on a fixed-term contract. Successful completion of the course and qualification as a basic pharmacist assistant can lead to permanent employment.
Programme Responsibilities
Learners will have the opportunity to perform a variety of duties, which include but are not limited to:
- Dispensing and Selling Medicines: Assist in the sale of Schedule 1 medicines or scheduled substances under supervision.
- Compounding and Preparation: Support in the compounding, preparation, or manipulation of non-sterile medicines according to approved formulas and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Stock Management: Help unpack, merchandise, and ensure the cleanliness of dispensary and over-the-counter (OTC) shelves as directed by the responsible pharmacist.
- Script Management: Learn to accurately interpret prescriptions, ensuring compliance with legal and professional standards as required by the SAPC.
- Dispensing Accuracy: Facilitate the picking, packing, labeling, and verification of medications under pharmacist supervision, while understanding common dosages and critical drug interactions.
- Inventory Control: Monitor stock levels, check expiry dates, and manage the arrangement and organization of scheduled medicines.
- Patient Support: Follow up on prescription statuses, appointments, and call center inquiries, ensuring seamless customer service.
- Health Education: Provide health-related information to individuals to promote wellness.
- Scheme Authorization: Assist with authorization for chronic medications, including HIV, AIDS, and oncology treatments.
- Reporting and Receiving: Notify the dispensary manager of stock discrepancies and receive dispensary stock following company SOPs.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for this programme, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Educational Qualification: A Grade 12 Certificate with Mathematics (Higher Grade) and either Physical or Life Sciences.
- Minimum Academic Achievement: An average of at least 50%.
