Job Description
The Operational Basic Ambulance Assistant (BAA) is responsible for attending to emergency calls and delivering medical care within the Basic Life Support (BLS) scope of practice. The role requires readiness to respond to emergencies, administer first aid, and ensure that medical equipment is well-maintained. The successful candidate will also contribute to ER24’s reputation by maintaining a professional and compassionate approach when dealing with patients and the community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure operational preparedness for emergency calls
- Administer patient care in line with the Basic Ambulance Assistant (BAA) scope of practice
- Maintain accurate and detailed Patient Report Forms (PRFs)
- Ensure compliance with Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) guidelines
- Build and maintain a positive public image for ER24

Ideal Candidate
To be successful in this role, candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of emergency response procedures, patient care principles, and professionalism in high-pressure situations.
Essential Education:
- Basic Ambulance Assistant (BAA) Certificate
Desired Education:
- Successful completion of training aligned with Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) published by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) is an added advantage.
- If not compliant with CPG at the time of application, candidates must complete this training during the probation period if selected.
Experience Requirements:
- Essential Minimum Experience: 6 months to 1 year of road Basic Life Support (BLS) experience
- Desired Experience: 2 years of road BLS experience
Role Responsibility
Operational Preparedness:
- Ensure that all medical equipment, supplies, and ambulances are in optimal working condition
- Familiarize with emergency travel routes, facilities, and demographics to ensure fast response times
- Conduct regular vehicle and equipment checks
Patient Care:
- Provide emergency medical assistance to patients in distress
- Perform life-saving procedures within the BAA scope of practice
- Accurately document patient conditions and interventions on Patient Report Forms (PRFs)
Compliance & Regulations:
- Follow HPCSA guidelines and ensure compliance with best practices in emergency medical care
- Adhere to company protocols and medical regulations
Public Engagement:
- Represent ER24 in a professional manner when interacting with patients, families, and the public
- Participate in community awareness programs and educational initiatives
Skills & Attributes
- Proficiency in English (written and verbal) to ensure clear communication with patients, medical teams, and emergency dispatchers
- Strong problem-solving skills to assess patient conditions and administer appropriate care
- Ability to work effectively under high-pressure emergency scenarios
- Knowledge of HPCSA scope of practice and compliance requirements
- Understanding of EMS operational environment and best practices
- Excellent time management and decision-making abilities
- Physical fitness and stamina to perform emergency medical procedures
