Based in Gauteng, this role is part of the Substation Department under the Construction Services Business Unit. Job Description:
The Utilityman Site Z04 role is a semi-skilled position involving a wide array of physically demanding tasks. This includes but is not limited to lifting, carrying, pushing, holding, and moving various equipment and materials. The individual will be expected to assist in operational activities within substation construction environments, complying with health and safety standards and adhering to Eskom’s quality requirements. The incumbent will perform technical support duties that are essential for the success of substation construction operations and will play a significant part in upholding safety and operational efficiency on-site.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualification:

  • Grade 12 (Matric)

Experience:

  • 1 to 2 years’ experience in a relevant technical field
  • Exposure to labour-intensive environments such as substation, energy, or construction sites
  • Knowledge or previous experience within the electrical infrastructure sector is advantageous

Required Knowledge:

  • Sound understanding of work procedures related to the construction discipline
  • Familiarity with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA)
  • Understanding of safety regulations and risk mitigation
  • Basic knowledge of cable construction and its safety requirements
  • Awareness of safety tools, materials, and equipment handling
  • Basic ability to compile a Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA)

Role Responsibility:
The role comes with core operational duties that support the technical aspects of substation construction. Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with the setup, movement, and transport of heavy materials and construction equipment
  • Performing labour-intensive duties such as lifting, loading, unloading, and site cleaning
  • Using power and hand tools safely and effectively under supervision
  • Ensuring all tools and equipment are accounted for and properly stored
  • Supporting technical staff and artisans during cable installations and testing
  • Ensuring that the work area is clean, organized, and hazard-free
  • Adhering to safety, health, environmental, and quality (SHEQ) policies at all times
  • Actively contributing to team discussions on improving site efficiency and safety
