Background & Job Description

The eThekwini Municipality is offering an exciting opportunity for aspiring technicians to join its Technical Training Division as a Learner Electrical Technician. This developmental position is structured to provide experiential learning and exposure to real-world engineering challenges in the electrical and electronics domains.

The main purpose of the role is to undergo structured technical training and perform a variety of practical tasks that support the operations of the department. Candidates will be actively involved in practical fieldwork, technical diagnostics, and operational maintenance under professional supervision.

Special working conditions apply, such as:

  • 40-hour work week (Monday to Friday)
  • Standby duty and shift work when required
  • Overtime as necessitated by operational needs
  • Willingness to be relocated or transferred between different depots or divisions
  • Compliance with PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) protocols

Tasks

As part of the structured training program, the Learner Electrical Technician will be responsible for:

  • Developing and applying safe working procedures
  • Gaining proficiency in the use of hand tools and power tools
  • Performing fault diagnostics and troubleshooting
  • Installing, operating, and maintaining motors/generators and control systems
  • Understanding lighting and illumination systems and associated control gear
  • Carrying out electrical installation work
  • Learning the principles of energy management
  • Acquiring knowledge of programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
  • Gaining basic skills in welding
  • Participating in practical fieldwork involving:
    • Cable jointing
    • Overhead line construction
    • Substation construction
  • Understanding battery systems, including chargers and battery banks

Qualifications

To qualify for this opportunity, applicants must meet the essential requirement below:

  • Successfully completed S4 of the National Diploma in Electrical or Electronic Engineering fundamentals
  • Pass a departmental proficiency test that assesses core knowledge of electrical or electronic engineering fundamentals
