Background & Job Description
The Council for Geoscience (CGS) is offering an exciting Human Resources Internship opportunity for three aspiring professionals at its Head Office in Pretoria. This 24-month fixed-term internship is structured to provide administrative and operational exposure to Human Resources processes within a leading scientific and research-based institution. The programme aims to equip interns with practical HR knowledge and experience, while promoting workplace readiness through active involvement in day-to-day HR operations and strategic projects.
This internship aligns with the CGS’s commitment to developing skills, enhancing employability, and contributing to South Africa’s broader transformation agenda. Preference will be given to applicants from under-represented designated groups, in line with the Council’s Employment Equity and diversity goals.
Tasks
Recruitment Support
- Screen and sort job applications received.
- Assist with scheduling and coordinating interviews.
- Prepare recruitment documentation packs.
- Support pre-employment screening processes.
- Organise onboarding paperwork for new hires.
HR Administration
- Assist with payroll and employee benefit administration.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date employee files.
- Update HR databases and file necessary HR documents.
- Help coordinate HR events, meetings, and initiatives.
Learning and Development
- Support the organisation and implementation of training and development activities.
Employee Relations
- Participate in employee relations activities and meetings.
Project Implementation/Project Management
- Provide support for internal HR projects including:
- Performance management initiatives
- Employee wellness programs
Quality Assurance and Compliance
- Adhere to ISO and international HR best practices.
- Ensure compliance with CGS policies and HR governance frameworks.
Qualifications
To be considered for this internship, candidates must meet the following educational requirements:
- A completed Grade 12 / Matric certificate.
- An NQF Level 5 qualification in:
- Human Resources Management
- Human Resources Development
- Or a relevant equivalent qualification
Experience
While no prior work experience is required, the following knowledge areas are advantageous:
- Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA)
- Labour Relations Act (LRA)
- Employment Equity Act (EEA)
- Skills Development Act (SDA)
