Introduction
The Waterberg District Municipality in Modimolle, Limpopo, is inviting unemployed South African graduates to apply for its Municipal Finance Management Internship Programme (MFMIP) 2025. This programme is designed to provide professional training and workplace exposure within the financial sector of local government. The internship equips graduates with practical skills, knowledge of municipal finance operations, and exposure to the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA), preparing them for a career in local government finance.

What is Waterberg District Municipality Financial Management Internship?
The Municipal Finance Management Internship Programme (MFMIP) is a structured graduate internship that combines professional training with hands-on experience in a municipal finance environment. Interns gain in-depth knowledge of municipal financial management, including budgeting, reporting, risk management, and supply chain operations. The programme follows a structured learning path aligned with the Municipal Minimum Competency Regulations and may lead to recognized qualifications in municipal finance management.

Minimum Requirements:
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered:

  • Grade 12 certificate
  • A three-year National Diploma or BCom Degree in one of the following fields:
    • Financial Management
    • Accounting
    • Economics
    • Finance (including Risk Management and/or Auditing)
  • No previous work experience required
  • Must be between the ages of 21 and 35
  • Must not have participated in any internship programme before

Role Responsibility:
Interns will gain practical experience across key municipal finance functions, including:

  • Implementation of GRAP (Generally Recognized Accounting Practice) and budget reforms
  • Financial and performance reporting
  • Change, risk, and project management
  • Expenditure and revenue management
  • Supply chain and procurement management
  • Application of the MFMA (Municipal Finance Management Act)
  • Asset management
