Introduction

Joburg City Theatres (JCT) is offering a comprehensive 2025/2026 internship programme aimed at young South African graduates eager to gain professional experience in the arts and theatre sector. Interns will have the opportunity to work across JCT’s three premier venues: Joburg Theatre, Soweto Theatre, and Roodepoort Theatre. This programme provides exposure in theatre management, marketing, technical support, and other creative fields, preparing interns for future careers in the cultural and arts industries.

What is Joburg City Theatres Internship?

The Joburg City Theatres Internship Programme is a structured initiative designed to provide young professionals with practical, hands-on experience in the management, production, and promotion of theatre and arts. The internships are available across multiple disciplines, including stage management, marketing, HR, technical production, graphic design, and building & security support.

Minimum Requirements

  • South African citizen, aged 18–35
  • Resident of Johannesburg communities
  • Must have completed Grade 12 and a relevant qualification (Diploma, Degree, or N6)
  • Applicants must not have participated in a similar internship before

Role Responsibilities and Available Opportunities

1. Programming Internships (x3)

  • Location: Joburg Theatre, Soweto Theatre, Roodepoort Theatre
  • Reference: PR3/08/2025
  • Qualification: National Diploma or Bachelor’s in Theatre, Performing Arts, Arts Management, Project Management, or equivalent
  • Responsibilities:
    • Supporting productions and rehearsals
    • Scheduling and production tracking
    • Liaising with artists and coordinating budgets
    • Preparing reports and documentation

2. Stage Internship

  • Qualification: National Diploma or equivalent in Live Events Technical Production
  • Responsibilities:
    • Rigging and operating lighting, audio, and AV systems
    • Assisting with sets, props, and maintenance
    • Conducting equipment inventory

    • Building maintenance and basic repairs
    • Electrical and plumbing support
    • Ensuring safety compliance and inspections
