Introduction

Johannesburg Water is seeking skilled artisans to join its team as Artisan Bricklayer X10 on a 12-month fixed-term contract. This is an excellent opportunity for experienced bricklayers to contribute to the city’s water and sewer infrastructure while working in a dynamic and professional environment.

Job Description

The primary role of the Artisan Bricklayer is to carry out bricklaying, paving, tiling, plastering, and concrete work in and around water and sewer network infrastructure. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining and repairing structures to ensure safe and efficient water supply and sanitation services to the residents of Johannesburg.

The ideal candidate for this position should possess a strong understanding of bricklaying, paving, and concrete work. They must have experience working in a similar role, be knowledgeable about safety procedures, and possess excellent problem-solving abilities. A high level of physical fitness and the ability to work in diverse weather conditions are essential for this role.

Role Responsibilities

  • Submit daily job cards to the foreman or operations manager
  • Complete check sheets, overtime sheets, and vehicle inspection sheets accurately before the end of each shift
  • Ensure the submission of petrol slips monthly, in line with Johannesburg Water’s vehicle policy
  • Adhere to Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHASA), South African National Standards (SANS), and Johannesburg Water safety procedures
  • Conduct risk assessments before entering excavations and ensure the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Assist in the identification and development of personnel
  • Foster good industrial relations and maintain effective communication in alignment with company values
  • Construct various structures including walls, chambers, steps, pillars, culverts, valve boxes, meter boxes, and hydrant boxes
  • Execute tiling of floors and walls, plastering, excavation, and compaction of subsoil
  • Mix cement and concrete according to specifications and assemble bending schedules as per plan
  • Build forms for concrete slabs and chamber decks, ensuring proper shuttering and propping
  • Reinstate road kerbs, guttering, paving, and driveways as required
  • Modify and enhance existing buildings by cutting in and installing doors and windows
  • Conduct general building maintenance at depots as required
  • Complete or repair work left incomplete by contractors or other user departments
  • Excavate, shore, and backfill with a focus on safety and team coordination

  • Technical Proficiency: Strong knowledge of bricklaying, paving, tiling, and concrete work

Job Requirements

  • Educational Qualification: Grade 10 or N1 (NQF2)
  • Trade Certification: Bricklaying Trade Test Certificate or Learnership (NQF 4)
  • Work Experience: Minimum 3 years’ experience in bricklaying, paving, and concrete work
  • Supervisory Experience: Basic knowledge of supervising a construction team
  • Driver’s License: Valid Code 10 Driver’s License with PrDP
