Key Responsibilities

As a Fire Fighter Intern, you will engage in a range of critical responsibilities, including:

  • Operational Readiness: Receive and execute daily tasks from the Station Officer, including testing and checking vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintenance: Regularly clean and inspect firefighting equipment and vehicles, and report any malfunctions.
  • Fire Response: Assist in combating structural, grass, and wildland fires, working closely with senior personnel on the scene.
  • Rescue Work: Engage in rescue operations as directed, following protocols to ensure safety and efficacy.
  • Control Room Duties: Operate within the control room as necessary, providing critical support to active incidents.
  • Additional Duties: Assist with any other responsibilities assigned by your supervisor to support firefighting operations.

This hands-on experience will provide a foundation in fire safety, emergency response, and operational discipline, preparing interns for future roles within fire services.

Internship Requirements

To qualify for the Fire Fighter Internship at Midvaal Local Municipality, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Educational Background: A minimum of Grade 12 or equivalent. Certifications such as Fire Fighter 1 & 2, Hazmat Awareness, and Operations are recognized as equivalent qualifications.
  • First Aid: Completion of a First Aid Level 3 course or Basic Ambulance Course.
  • Licensing: Code C Driver’s License is required.
  • Physical Fitness: Must be medically fit and physically able to perform operational duties, including the ability to swim.
  • Phobia-Free: Candidates should be free from claustrophobia, acrophobia, or any other phobias that may impact performance.
  • Experience Advantage: Previous internship experience of at least three months, or familiarity with fire and rescue services, will be an added benefit.
