Job Description
The Track Master is responsible for the efficient utilization of labor, plant, and materials required for track maintenance. The role focuses on ensuring high-quality structural and geometric conditions of the Permanent Way to guarantee the safe passage of trains, safety of the public, and the safety and health of maintenance personnel.
This position demands technical proficiency in railway track systems, leadership in managing teams, and strong coordination with related departments. The successful candidate will carry out routine and emergency maintenance, enforce safety protocols, and manage track-related data for planning and reporting purposes.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications and training standards:
- Mathematics (Senior Grade)
- Track Master Training Course, completed in the following phases:
- Phase I – Introduction, Theory and Experiential Training
- Phase II – Train-working Rules, Theory and Experiential Training
- Phase III – Advanced Theory and Experiential Training
- Valid Driver’s License
Role Responsibility
Key Performance Areas (KPAs) for the Track Master include, but are not limited to:
- Imposing and uplifting of speed restrictions
- Closing and re-opening of tracks for scheduled maintenance or emergencies
- Applying safe working procedures for crews and infrastructure
- Ensuring correct safeguarding of maintenance crews
- Maintaining safe housekeeping standards, including the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Effective utilization of crew resources and scheduling
- Managing the use of Perway materials for efficiency and minimum waste
- Performing repair work according to defined procedures and safety standards
- Ensuring effective synergy between departments, resources, and operations
- Utilizing the IM 2000 system to strategically plan workloads
- Using data from the Ultrasonic Measurement Car to plan inspections and repairs
- Interpreting and acting on reports from:
- The Operating Department
- Patrolmen in the field
- Using the EMPAC System to:
- Plan
- Schedule
- Control workloads and resources
Skills and Attributes
Successful candidates must possess the following competencies and personal characteristics:
Technical Competencies
- Strong knowledge of railway track systems, including maintenance and repair techniques
- Ability to apply train-working rules in both theory and practical situations
- Proficiency in interpreting and using track-related data systems (IM 2000, EMPAC, Ultrasonic Measurement Car)
- Familiarity with national regulations and responsibilities related to:
- Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85)
- Mine Health and Safety Act (Act 16)
- Environmental Management Acts
- SARTSM Chapter 7 (South African Road Traffic Signs Manual)
Leadership & Management
- Experience in supervising field teams
- Ability to plan and prioritize tasks efficiently
- Good judgment under pressure, especially during emergencies
- Strong sense of responsibility and accountability
Safety and Compliance
- Meticulous adherence to safety protocols and legal compliance
- Vigilance in enforcing the use of PPE and maintaining safe work environments
Communication and Reporting
- Ability to communicate clearly with crews and stakeholders
- Effective in documenting maintenance activities
- Skilled in analyzing reports and translating findings into actionable maintenance plans
