Job Description
The Laboratory Assistant role is centered in the Inorganic Chemistry Section of Rand Water’s Scientific Services. The successful candidates will assist in routine sample preparation and basic testing, as well as day-to-day maintenance of laboratory equipment and cleanliness.
This position requires attention to detail, the ability to work under pressure, and compliance with safety, health, environmental, risk, and quality (SHERQ) standards. Laboratory Assistants play a pivotal role in ensuring that samples are accurately prepared, tracked, and tested to support high-quality analytical output.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants should meet the following minimum qualifications and experience requirements:
- Educational Qualification:
- NQF Level 4 qualification with Mathematics and Science as key subjects.
- Work Experience:
- At least 2 years of relevant experience, preferably in an analytical laboratory environment.
Role Responsibility
The successful candidates will be responsible for a wide range of laboratory support functions. These include:
- Sample Handling and Preparation:
- Printing of sample labels and sampling schedules using LIMS (Labware).
- Collection, filtering, distribution, and disposal of water samples.
- Receiving and scanning of sample bottles from the cooler room into the laboratory system.
- Preparation of sample containers for various inorganic chemical tests.
- Analytical Support:
- Performing basic laboratory tests such as Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and Methylene Blue Active Substances (MBAS).
- Handling of gas cylinders used in testing procedures
- Proper disposal of hazardous laboratory chemicals according to safety standards.
- Laboratory Maintenance:
- Cleaning of laboratory glassware and assisting with general laboratory hygiene.
- Ensuring that workspaces are kept clean, organized, and safe according to good housekeeping and SHE principles.
- Operational Compliance:
- Adhering to standard laboratory procedures and SHERQ protocols.
- Following ISO 17025 quality assurance guidelines.
