Background & Job Description

Robben Island Museum, a national heritage site under the Department of Sport, Arts & Culture, is offering a rare employment opportunity to 25 individuals. These positions are based within the Heritage and Research Department and are focused on short-term environmental rehabilitation and maintenance work across the island. The role aims to ensure the airstrip and other essential facilities are kept clean, safe, and accessible.

Successful candidates will contribute to conservation and rehabilitation efforts on the island – a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its significant cultural and historical legacy. The position provides valuable short-term work experience in facilities maintenance, horticulture, and environmental management.


Tasks

As a General Assistant, your daily responsibilities will include:

  • Brush-cutting overgrown vegetation using weed-eaters and hand-held equipment
  • Plucking and removing unwanted weed growth
  • Spraying herbicides in compliance with safety standards
  • Collecting, sorting, and disposing of deadwood and plant debris
  • Ensuring that all health and safety guidelines are strictly followed

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • A Grade 12 (Matric) certificate
  • Must be between the ages of 21 and 35
  • Must be willing and able to stay and work on Robben Island for the full contract duration

Experience

Although no formal work experience is required, preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate the following:

  • Ability to operate weed-eaters and small horticultural machinery
  • Capable of performing physically demanding tasks
  • Proven ability to work well in teams
  • Flexibility to work in harsh outdoor environments
  • Willingness to work overtime and weekends, as required
