Compulsory Generic Requirements

  • Criminal Record: No prior convictions or pending criminal/departmental/civil cases.
  • Tattoo Policy: No visible tattoos when wearing the official SAPS uniform.
  • Security Clearance: Applicants will undergo security screening and fingerprint verification.

Post-Specific Requirements

  • Trade Test Certificate: A valid Trade Test Certificate in automotive mechanics (petrol or diesel) as per the Skills Development Amendment Act 37 of 2008.
  • Work Experience: Experience in vehicle mechanics is an added advantage.

Core Responsibilities of Motor Vehicle Mechanics

As a SAPS Motor Vehicle Mechanic, your role will include:

  • Repairs and Maintenance: Conducting cost-effective and high-quality repairs and maintenance on police vehicles.
  • Diagnostics: Identifying issues, stripping, and diagnosing vehicles to determine required parts.
  • Parts Management: Compiling parts request lists for each service or repair.
  • Job Documentation: Completing job cards detailing work performed and time taken.
  • Safety Compliance: Maintaining compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act (Act 83 of 1995).
  • Workshop Maintenance: Ensuring a clean and safe working environment.
  • Tool Management: Ensuring the safe-keeping of tools and equipment.
  • Apprenticeship Mentoring: Mentoring apprentices under supervision.
