Introduction
The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) is committed to empowering local communities by providing developmental opportunities for young people. Through the Department of Social Development, CoJ has announced its Student Internship Programme for 2025. These internships are aimed at students and graduates who want to gain practical experience while contributing to community development initiatives. The programme runs for a duration of up to 18 months and offers hands-on training in key focus areas.
What is City of Johannesburg Student Internships?
The City of Johannesburg Student Internships are structured programmes designed to provide students with valuable workplace exposure and professional development. The internships focus on community upliftment, food resilience, and youth empowerment. Successful candidates will be placed within relevant branches of the Department of Social Development and will receive a stipend of R10 109,86 per month.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements depending on the internship stream:
For Food Value Chain Internship (Food Resilience Unit):
- Grade 12 / NQF Level 4
- Degree or Diploma in Agriculture Studies / Development Studies (minimum 360 credits)
- Must be a resident of the City of Johannesburg
For Youth Coordination Internship (Targeted Beneficiaries Unit):
- Grade 12 / NQF Level 4
- BA Degree in Development Studies / Social Sciences (NQF Level 7)
- Must be a resident of the City of Johannesburg
Role Responsibility
Food Value Chain Internship Responsibilities:
- Support the development and implementation of agricultural value chain programmes
- Assist in food processing, compliance with SABS and HACCP standards, and market linkage
- Provide support to smallholder farmers through production assistance
- Plan agricultural market days and promote access to markets
- Monitor, evaluate, and report on project outcomes
Youth Coordination Internship Responsibilities:
- Support youth empowerment and development initiatives
- Provide administrative and stakeholder coordination support
- Facilitate service integration for youth services
- Prepare reports, records, and administrative documents
- Engage with community stakeholders to promote youth programmes
Skills and Attributes

- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Knowledge of community development and social upliftment principles
- Project management and organisational skills
- Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
