The Contract Trainee Controller is part of the Transnet Pipelines Operating Division. As a trainee, you will be part of a dynamic team responsible for the safe and efficient movement of petroleum products through a complex pipeline network. This position involves operating highly specialized equipment and adhering to safety protocols to ensure the smooth transport of products.

Position Purpose

The primary goal of the Contract Trainee Controller is to ensure the safe and efficient movement of petroleum products through the pipeline network. This requires the operation of specialized equipment in accordance with scheduled programs and instructions. A significant aspect of this role is ensuring that safety protocols are followed to protect personnel, company assets, and the surrounding environment. Position Outputs

During the training period, the Trainee Controller will acquire skills and knowledge to fulfill several key outputs:

1. Risk and Pollution Control
   • Communicate risk status of the depot to relevant stakeholders.
   • Report and document risk status information.
   • Extract relevant information from systems to monitor risk.
   • Apply and enforce company regulations and legislation related to risk management.
   • Monitor separator tanks for leaks and spillages.
   • Drain water from bund areas.
2. Handling Transmixtures/Intermixtures
   • Operate company systems and software to control pipeline equipment for managing transmixtures and intermixtures.
   • Plan and execute blending and/or tanker loading of intermixtures.
   • Capture and verify information for accuracy in alignment with company policies.
3. Minor Maintenance
   • Perform unscheduled minor maintenance tasks such as testing, lubricating, and repairing equipment.
   • Execute scheduled maintenance tasks and document maintenance activities.
4. Launching and Receiving Pigs and Spheres
   • Utilize systems and software to manage the launching of Pigs and Spheres.
   • Follow company policies and procedures for launching and receiving Pigs and Spheres.
5. Product Metering
   • Operate metering equipment and use company systems to monitor product movement.
   • Check and maintain the accuracy of metering equipment.
6. Shutting Down Product Movement
   • Manage pipeline shut-downs during sub-standard conditions.
   • Monitor and capture data related to the shut-down process.
7. Product Quality Testing
   • Use specialized equipment and software to conduct product quality tests.
   • Monitor pipeline equipment and product movement to ensure quality standards are met.

Qualifications and Experience

To be eligible for this position, applicants must meet the following qualifications and experience requirements:

• Educational Background:
  • Standard 10/Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science.
  • OR N3 Technical Engineering in fields such as Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, or Metering Control & Instrumentation.
• Competency Assessment:
  • Candidates must have passed a competency assessment for technical ability, including numeric, verbal, and abstract reasoning.
• Language Proficiency:
  • A strong command of the English language is essential for communication and documentation purposes.
• Job Requirements:
  • A valid driver’s license (code 08).
  • 12 to 18 months of on-the-job practical experience.
