As a Trainee Train Assistant, you will assist in the day-to-day operations and play an active role in ensuring the safety and punctuality of train services. You’ll have hands-on exposure to train handling, locomotive management, and rail safety protocols. Key Responsibilities of a Transnet Trainee Train Assistant
- Duty Sign-On and Preparation:
- Report to the designated workplace and begin your assigned duties.
- Determine which locomotive to prepare, obtain necessary equipment, and ensure the locomotive is ready for operation.
- Conduct safety checks on equipment, perform brake tests, and maintain a clean workspace.
- Locomotive Management:
- Prepare locomotives for operation, ensuring safety and functionality.
- Carry out pre-trip checks to confirm the roadworthiness of trains and adherence to safety standards.
- Assist in attaching and detaching vehicles as required, completing necessary documentation.
- Communication Equipment Handling:
- Equip the train with communication devices such as radios, handsets, or telemeters and test them for functionality.
- Ensure effective communication between team members throughout the journey.
- Enroute Train Assistance:
- Monitor signals and follow train safety protocols.
- Respond to emergencies, assist the Train Driver, and safeguard equipment during unexpected incidents.
- Shunting Activities:
- Assist in the controlled movement and placement of freight trucks.
- Handle tasks like updating vehicle lists and securing loads as required by work orders.
- Administrative Support:
- Maintain accurate records and complete a train journal at the end of each shift.
- Submit all documentation to the Section Manager for payroll processing and reporting.
Required Qualifications and Experience
To qualify for the Trainee Train Assistant role, you must meet the following criteria:
- Education: Matric/Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
- Minimum Age Requirement: 21 years (as per SANS 3000 regulations).
- Physical Fitness: Must meet specific physical, visual, and auditory standards.
- Psychomotor Ability: Demonstrated psychomotor skills, which will be assessed through the Vienna Testing System (VTS).
- Medical and Behavioral Risk Assessments: Ability to undergo periodic assessments to ensure mental and physical fitness for rail duties.
- Height Requirement: Minimum height of 1.6 meters.
