Job Description
The Trainee Train Assistant will work under the supervision of a certified Train Driver and be responsible for assisting in the daily operation of freight trains, including pre-trip inspections, enroute duties, and adherence to safety protocols. This role is physically demanding, safety-critical, and requires high levels of concentration, alertness, and stamina.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Sign on duty and receive work instructions
- Prepare and inspect locomotives before departure
- Load and position communication equipment such as radios and telemeters
- Conduct brake tests and other technical checks with the Train Driver
- Assist in train shunting, coupling, and placing/removing trucks at sidings
- Monitor train signals and provide feedback to the Train Driver
- Patrol locomotives to ensure operational efficiency and safety
- Protect train and infrastructure during incidents
- Perform post-trip inspections and report irregularities
- Complete trip journals and submit administrative documents after each shift

Minimum Educational Requirements:
- Grade 12 (Matric) certificate with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science
Additional Prerequisites:
- A minimum height of 1.6 meters
- Aged 21 years or older for compliance with SANS 3000 standards
- Must pass psychomotor evaluation via Vienna Testing System (VTS)
- Able to lift and carry heavy equipment
- Prepared to undergo periodic medical assessments and safety behavioral risk assessments
- Fit in terms of vision, hearing, mental and physical health
- Willing to work shifts, irregular hours, and weekends
- Willing to relocate if required and preference will be given to local applicants
