Introduction

This opportunity is designed to equip young South Africans with technical skills and hands-on training, paving the way for long-term careers in the water sector.
What is uMngeni-uThukela Water: Water & Waste Water Treatment Learnership?
The 12-month learnership programme will take place at Richards Bay and Jozini Water Treatment Plants in KwaZulu-Natal’s North East Region. The programme combines classroom learning, workplace exposure, and practical assessments. Upon completion, learners will receive a National Certificate in Water and Waste Water Treatment Practice (NQF Level 2), along with a Portfolio of Evidence (POE) as part of the assessment process.
This programme is aimed at 20 unemployed youth who are passionate about contributing to water services and environmental management.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Completed Matric (Grade 12) with passes in Mathematics and Physical Science
- Aged between 18 and 35
- Reside in deep rural areas within uMkhanyakude District or uMdoni Local Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal
- Motivated to pursue a career in water services, operations, or environmental management
- Applicants with qualifications at NQF Level 5 or higher are not eligible
- Young people living with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply
Applicants must also submit:
- Certified copy of Matric certificate showing Mathematics and Physical Science passes
- Certified copy of a valid South African ID
- Proof of residence (village applicants must provide a confirmation letter from the Traditional Authority Office)
- Mid-term matric school report confirming study within the same district of residence
- Detailed CV
- Short motivation letter explaining why they should be selected
- Affidavit confirming unemployment status

Role Responsibility
Learners will:
- Gain practical experience at water and wastewater treatment facilities
- Learn to operate, monitor, and maintain water treatment equipment
- Understand water quality standards and compliance requirements
- Develop skills in environmental management and health and safety procedures
- Complete assessments and submit a Portfolio of Evidence (POE) demonstrating practical competence
