Background & Job Description
The University of South Africa (UNISA), a leading distance education institution, invites suitably qualified professionals to apply for contract-based roles as External Markers in the College of Accounting Sciences. The primary focus of this appointment is to ensure consistent, ethical, and professional moderation of assessment tasks across various Management Accounting modules.
This is a yearly renewable opportunity that aligns with UNISA’s mission to uphold academic excellence and integrity within its distance learning environment. External markers are expected to serve as independent contractors and will be remunerated per task or assessment paper marked.
Tasks
External Markers will be responsible for the following duties:
- Moderating a variety of assessment tasks, including assignments, tests, and examinations
- Ensuring fair, consistent, and unbiased evaluation aligned with UNISA’s academic standards
- Adhering strictly to all university policies, particularly around assessment and plagiarism
- Providing constructive, timely, and student-centered feedback
- Upholding confidentiality of student information and assessment materials
- Meeting tight academic deadlines and quality benchmarks
- Participating in mandatory Moodle training prior to commencement
- Acting with professionalism and academic integrity at all times
Qualifications
Applicants must possess the following academic qualifications:
- A Master’s Degree in Accounting Sciences (NQF Level 9) – essential
- A PhD in Accounting Sciences (NQF Level 10) – advantageous
- Registration with a recognized Professional Body in the accounting profession – mandatory
Experience
Ideal candidates should meet the following experience criteria:
- Demonstrated work experience in commerce or industry
- Prior academic experience in teaching, tutoring, or assessment – preferred
- Familiarity with online learning management systems (LMS) such as Moodle
- Proficient in digital tools for marking and communication
