Key Responsibilities of a Teaching Assistant

  • Assisting Lecturers: Helping with the preparation of course materials, grading, and marking assessments.
  • Providing Student Support: Offering one-on-one or group tutoring sessions to students who need academic assistance.
  • Facilitating Discussions: Leading tutorials, practicals, and discussions in support of the main lectures, ensuring students have a deeper understanding of the material.
  • Administrative Tasks: Assisting with student attendance, records management, and maintaining academic discipline.
  • Developing Course Materials: Assisting with developing and updating learning resources.

Requirements:

To apply, you need to meet the following inherent requirements:

  • be a final year student of your undergraduate degree OR a postgraduate student in 2025;
  • be enrolled as a UFS student and be able to provide proof of registration in 2025;
  • have at least 1 year of tutoring, facilitating, or teaching experience as part of a certified programme. Tutoring students in your personal capacity in your free time is unfortunately not seen as certified tutorial experience;
  • be proficient in English; and computer literate.
  • excellent communication skills; Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), navigating the internet and Blackboard for facilitating classes;
  • time management skills;
  • excellent writing skills in English;
  • ability to work independently, as well as in a team;
  • ability to work respectfully with individuals of all cultures and backgrounds, perspectives and abilities; and
  • experience in conducting online and face-to-face classes.
