Duties and Responsibilities
The successful Trainee Train Assistant will be responsible for:
- Assisting Train Drivers during train operations
- Preparing locomotives before departure
- Conducting locomotive brake tests
- Preparing and checking communication equipment
- Performing pre-trip inspections of trains
- Assisting with coupling and uncoupling locomotives
- Executing shunting activities in sidings and rail yards
- Monitoring signals and train movements
- Assisting during emergencies and incidents
- Completing train journals and administration duties
- Ensuring compliance with railway safety regulations
- Supporting efficient freight transportation operations
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
Educational Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric)
- Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science
Additional Requirements
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Minimum height of 1.6 metres
- Physically fit and able to carry heavy objects
- Good hearing and eyesight
- Mentally fit for safety-critical railway operations
- Willing to work shifts, weekends, public holidays, and overtime when required
- Willing to undergo medical examinations and safety behavioural assessments
Training Requirements
Candidates must be willing to:
- Successfully complete Train Assistant training
- Undergo theoretical and practical railway training
- Obtain certification to work independently as a Train Assistant
