Job Description

The Ward Assistant will provide essential support services within hospital wards, ensuring a clean, safe, and efficient environment for patients and healthcare professionals. The role involves assisting with food distribution, linen management, waste handling, equipment transportation, and maintaining ward cleanliness.

Key Responsibilities

  • Transport food trolleys between wards and the food service unit.
  • Serve meals and beverages to patients under nursing supervision.
  • Clean ward kitchens and wash dishes.
  • Dust and sanitize ward equipment.
  • Transport sterile and unsterile equipment to and from CSSD.
  • Receive, count, and pack clean linen.
  • Sort, count, and pack dirty linen for collection.
  • Handle medical waste and sharps containers according to policy.
  • Collect emergency stock and medication from stores and pharmacy.
  • Maintain cleanliness of sluice rooms and ward equipment.
  • Follow Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) guidelines.
  • Rotate between wards as required.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must possess:

  • NQF Level 1 or NQF Level 2 qualification (ABET Level 4 Certificate or equivalent).
  • No previous work experience required.
  • Knowledge of Batho Pele Principles.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Physical fitness and strength to perform manual tasks.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Reliability, honesty, and professionalism.
  • Ability to follow instructions from supervisors.
