Key Responsibilities
As a Motor Mechanic at Transnet, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of the mobile fleet. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Mechanical Inspections: Perform post-operation inspections on mobile fleet equipment to prevent faults during the next operation.
- Preventative Maintenance: Conduct regular maintenance on mobile fleet equipment to maintain reliability and high availability.
- Equipment Monitoring: Continuously monitor equipment for deviations to identify potential malfunctions early.
- Apprenticeship Training: Assist in training apprentices according to their development plans to ensure skills transfer.
- Breakdown Response: Repair breakdowns quickly to minimize operational downtime, always adhering to safety standards.
- Spare Parts Management: Assess repair needs and follow up with supervisors to ensure parts are ordered promptly.
- Safety Compliance: Isolate equipment during repairs to maintain a safe working environment.
- Decision-Making: Make decisions on breakdowns or maintenance in the absence of the supervisor.
- Equipment Lifespan: Maintain equipment conditions to maximize its lifespan.
- Rigging Operations: Prepare for preventative maintenance and breakdowns through rigging operations.
- Standby Duties: Perform standby duties as needed.
Qualifications and Experience
To be eligible for the Motor Mechanic position, candidates must meet the following qualifications and experience criteria:
- Trade Test Certificate: Red Seal Diesel Mechanic Trade Test Certificate.
- Driver’s License: Valid Code 08/B vehicle driver’s license.
- Experience:
- Internal Candidates: 1 year of relevant experience in the Diesel Mechanic environment (apprenticeship training included).
- External Candidates: 2-3 years of relevant experience in the Diesel Mechanic environment.
Competencies
To succeed in this role, candidates should have:
- Knowledge of:
- SAP PM system or similar platforms.
- Mechanical and hydraulic systems.
- Rigging and lifting equipment.
- Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act.
- Diesel engine technology.
- Lift truck and earthmoving equipment.
- Skills in:
- Systematic fault finding and root cause analysis.
- Interpretation of schematic drawings.
- Decision-making under pressure.
- Good communication and human relations.
