During this period, the selected interns will rotate every six weeks between Jacaranda FM in Midrand and VowFM at Wits University in Johannesburg.   • General Newsroom Operations: Assisting in the day-to-day functions of the newsroom.
  • Story Compilation: Helping journalists gather and compile their stories.
  • Field Reporting: Reporting from the field and covering events.
  • News Desk Operations: Working on the news desk and learning the intricacies of news production.
  • Practical Skills Development: Assisting in different areas of the news department to gain a holistic understanding of newsroom operations.

VowFM

At VowFM, interns will focus on developing their skills in these key areas:

  • Daily Bulletins: Compiling and reading daily news bulletins.
  • Field Reporting: Reporting from the field and covering various events.
  • Story Packaging: Creating and packaging stories for current affairs programs.
  • News Programming: Being actively involved in daily news and current affairs programming.
  • Social Media: Updating social media platforms with news content.
  • Short Courses: Undertaking short courses with the Wits Radio Academy to enhance their journalism skills.

Requirements

To be considered for this internship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Educational Qualification: A Bachelor’s Degree or 3-year National Diploma in Journalism or a related field.
  • Driver’s Licence: A valid driver’s licence or in the process of obtaining one.
  • Language Proficiency: Excellent command of the English language, with a preference for bilingual candidates (Afrikaans and English).
  • Writing and Voicing Skills: Strong ability to write and voice scripts for radio.
  • Fact-Checking: Ability to check facts, accuracy, and quality of stories.
  • Technical Skills: Experience in operating studio and field recording and production equipment.
  • Editing Skills: Basic editing and multi-track mixing experience.
