The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), managed by the NRF, is at the forefront of South Africa’s participation in the global Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Radio Telescope project. SARAO oversees several major initiatives such as the MeerKAT telescope in the Karoo, the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO) in Gauteng, and the African Very Long Baseline Interferometry (AVN) program operating in nine African countries. These initiatives are complemented by associated human capital development and commercialization endeavors.

The General Worker will assist in the operation and maintenance of the Karoo site. This role requires a dedicated individual who can perform a variety of maintenance tasks to ensure the efficient running of the facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Infrastructure Maintenance:
  • Inspect and maintain existing fences, gates, windmills, dams, and farm roads to ensure they are in good condition and functional.
  1. Equipment Operation:
  • Operate heavy and light machinery, including specialized equipment like the Honey Sucker, following safety protocols.
  1. Trenching Operations:
  • Assist with the opening and closing of trenches, ensuring safety and compliance with regulations.
  1. Vegetation Management:
  • Trim and remove trees as necessary to maintain the site’s appearance and safety.
  1. Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance:
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of vehicles and equipment to ensure they are in optimal working condition.
  1. Power Line Maintenance:
  • Assist in maintaining power lines, including troubleshooting and minor repairs.
  1. Waste Management:
  • Collect and dispose of waste bins regularly to maintain site cleanliness and hygiene.
  1. Graveyard Fencing:
  • Help with the fencing and upkeep of graveyards on the premises.
  1. Gardening:
  • Maintain existing gardens and orchards on the farms, including planting, watering, and general upkeep.
  1. General Duties:
    • Perform any other general tasks as assigned by the line manager to support the overall operations of the site.

Key Requirements

Educational Qualifications:

  • Minimum education level of Grade 10.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is an added advantage.

Work Experience:

  • At least 2 years of experience as a general worker in either the construction industry or on a farm, demonstrating practical knowledge and skills relevant to the role.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of and adherence to safety procedures.
  • Proficiency in the use of common hand tools, both electrical and mechanical.
  • Ability to work at heights and handle heavy lifting safely.

Personal Attributes:

  • Ability to follow detailed instructions accurately.
  • Physical and mental fitness, capable of climbing large trucks and performing labor-intensive tasks.
  • Safety-oriented mindset with a commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Trustworthy, reliable, and able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision.
  • Sober habits and a professional attitude.
