Number 1: Chemical Engineering Intern

  • LOCATION: Maydon Wharf factory

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Complete all Internship requirements as stipulated by Unilever, including but limited to training attendance, assessments completion, project completion, logbook completion and presentations as needed
  • The SUIT Intern role is essential in assisting with Eliminating Waste and Loss according to the UMS prioritization process using AM, PM, FI and QC pillar tools and methodologies
  • Process and Organizational Design. Ensure factory lines and processes are optimally resourced (e.g. manpower ratios are efficient and sustainable)
  • Create Technical Standards to ensure process stability on the line. (e.g. Center lining)
  • SUIT intern will be exposed to activities that will enhance their Project Management skills, Engaging key stakeholders and driving the change management process
  • Follow SOP procedures as needed within the operation assigned to
  • Conform to all site rules governing safety of self and others, quality and code of business principles

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Completed Degree or National Diploma in Chemical Engineering
  • Use of computer software programs – Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word is essential
  • Good communication skills both written and verbal – proficient in English

JOB PURPOSE

The purpose of this role is to evaluate, propose and design processes, plant, operations and technology to deliver product and process innovation and increased volumes, while ensuring that capacity, quality, safety and environment standards are maintained.

WHAT WILL YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES BE

  • Apply extensively the full range of Focused and Quality Improvement methods and tools to counter losses identified in the areas of Safety, Quality, Cost Deployment, Customer Service and Logistics to deliver focused improvement into the Factory.  The Cost Deployment pillar will be populated with data built up through application of the Managing Manufacturing Performance Code, which is key to ensuring focus on key losses.
  • Working directly with the line crews on a daily basis the, Process Engineer also acts as the technical trainer for line teams and provides coaching in phenomena identification, root cause analysis and the establishment of counter-measures. 
  • Responsible for the validation of all process improvements and the establishment of revised basic conditions on the line.  A core deliverable is eliminate losses and waste and increase the stability of the line to support the transition of traditional line teams to semi-autonomous teams. 

Output of manufacturing plant:

  • Application and accuracy of MMP Code data to ensure loss tree is available for manufacturing
  • Eliminate waste and Loss according to the WCM prioritization process using AM, PM, FI and QC pillar tools and methodologies 
  • Collect and analyse complex data to penetrate problems’ phenomena and understand root causes 
  • RCA of any process losses and implementation of corrective actions, using the full set of WCM methods and tools to identify root causes, define countermeasures and validate their effectiveness; mastery of AM, PM, Q and FI tools and processes. 
  • On standby for technical assistance when processing problems occur
  • Chemical Mass balances for in line processes in order to develop set points and controls for continuous and batch plant processes

Quality of manufacturing plant:

  • Consumer & Customer Focus:  Ensure elimination of quality losses and implementing corrective actions in order to maintain processes under control
  • RCA of any quality losses and implementation of corrective actions

Capability building:

  • Create Technical Standards to ensure manufacturing and line stability
  • Create SOPs for process in order to standardize methods of manufacturing to ensure process control, train line crews on technical standards, SOPs and build capability for operators to understand corrective actions for process control
  • Team lead when Unit manager not available, must be able to lead the team of operators

Innovation/Renovations/Change management:

  • Technical support for trials for changes such as innovations/reno’s/5S etc.
  • Recipe creation for changes or new products in the control system
  • Baseline trending and analysis to support new changes and trials

Experiences & Qualifications

  • 2-3 years Process Engineering experience from a Continuous Processing background within FMCG/ Manufacturing environment
  • Post Graduate level education Chemical Engineering.

Skills

  • Influences and persuades Marketing, Supply Chain, Development, Production and Projects Departments to ensure smooth completion of specified tasks regarding the introduction of new products and machinery within the plant.
  • Sources information regarding plant processes and equipment from other relevant companies.
