Job Opportunity: Flight/Maintenance Safety Officer at South African Airways (SAA) The Flight/Maintenance Safety Officer is pivotal in mitigating and managing aviation safety hazards, occurrences, and incidents. This role is dedicated to preventing aircraft damage or accidents by conducting rigorous safety checks, audits, and inspections. Additionally, the officer supports ensuring compliance and safety, contributing to optimizing the Group Safety function by upholding Technical Safety standards.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Strategic Implementation: Understands and implements the Safety strategy within the designated area of responsibility, providing recommendations to support the departmental strategy and plan.
  • Financial Management: Contributes to budget management, cost containment, and applies cost-saving initiatives. Provides recommendations to enhance profitability.
  • Process Management: Ensures the correct application of processes and systems, utilizing resources effectively to meet customer requirements and expectations.
  • Governance and Risk Management: Adheres to policies, processes, and systems, delivering regular and timely reports to key stakeholders. Participates in continuous optimization programs and projects.
  • Safety and Compliance: Supports the Airline in meeting corporate and departmental goals related to aviation safety. Assists in incident/accident investigations and monitors corrective actions.
  • Safety Management System (SMS): Assists in maintaining the safety management program in line with SACAA regulations, ICAO, and IATA standards.
  • Audits and Inspections: Conducts safety audits and third-party audits, compiles audit reports, and maintains an effective safety corrective action program.
  • Training and Communication: Supports safety training programs, processes safety reports, and develops safety bulletins and notices. Conducts safety studies and maintains a Safety Library.
  • Hazard Identification: Assists in hazard identification, risk assessment, and maintaining the Aviation Safety Risk Register and Technical Recommendation Logs.
  • Management of Change: Supports the development, implementation, and maintenance of the Management of Change process to ensure optimal safety performance.
  • Promotion of Technical Safety: Promotes technical safety through training, communiquĂ©s, presentations, and other promotional activities.
  • Inspections and Audits: Conducts line operations safety inspections/audits and compiles safety audit reports, ensuring effective safety corrective action programs.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Monitors corrective action plans and mitigation strategies, living and modeling the Airline’s values.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent at NQF level 4.
  • A 3-year diploma in A/C Mechanical or Avionics/Safety Management at NQF level 6.
  • Higher tertiary qualifications in maintenance are advantageous.
  • Commercial Pilot License (Air Transport Pilot) or Aircraft Maintenance License is beneficial.
  • Certificates in Auditing, Aviation Medicine (AVMED), and Human Factors are required.
  • Valid unendorsed driver’s license (Code B).
  • 2-3 years of operational experience in aircraft maintenance or quality assurance.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of SACAA Technical Standards/Regulations (CAT’s/CAR’s).
  • Understanding of airline operating procedures, human factors in maintenance, safety management, and crew resource management (CRM).
  • Knowledge of dangerous goods regulations (DGR) and airline technical/flight safety and emergency procedures.
  • Proficiency in AVSEC awareness training, computer literacy (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), and report writing.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, information processing, resource utilization, communication (verbal and written), and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work proactively under pressure, multitask, and meet deadlines.
  • Team player with flexibility, adaptability, and a drive for results.
  • Strong organizational awareness, ethics, integrity, and collaboration.
