The primary purpose of the Port Worker role is to provide general labour as instructed by the supervisor to ensure optimal cargo operations and maintain a safe and clean working environment across Transnet Port Terminals (MPT and DBT).
Key Responsibilities and Position Outputs
The role of a Port Worker covers a variety of operational tasks, including:
- Cleaning of Operational Equipment:
- Cleaning the windows and cabins of ship-to-shore cranes and other equipment.
- Inspection Tasks:
- Inspecting containers for damage or unsafe conditions.
- Reefer Operations:
- Monitoring reefer containers to ensure temperature compliance.
- Rail Wagon Operations:
- Opening and closing of rail wagon twist-locks.
- Shunting, coupling, and uncoupling of rail wagons as required.
- Cargo Handling and Loading/Off-Loading:
- Following standard operating procedures to load and unload cargo safely.
- Tarping and Dunnage Placement:
- Tarping or untarping cargo as needed.
- Placing and removing dunnage to secure cargo.
- Cleaning Duties:
- Cleaning rail trucks, operational areas, plants, workshops, offices, sheds, and ablution facilities.
- Documentation Handling:
- Completing accident reports and other required documents.
- Equipment Identification:
- Ensuring the correct cargo-handling gear is selected and used.
Qualifications and Experience Required
- Option 1:
- Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 qualification.
- Minimum of 6 months experience in a relevant operational role.
- Option 2:
- Grade 10 / NQF Level 2 qualification.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in an operational environment.
Competencies and Skills
Knowledge Requirements:
- Terminal layout and operations.
- Safety protocols in port operations.
- Stack positions for cargo handling.
Skills Requirements:
- Attention to detail: Ensuring accuracy in operations.
- Cleanliness: Maintaining clean work areas and equipment.
